A practical driver field handbook · Chapter 4 of 4

When connectivity fails: understand queued work and file uploads

Offline support is specific, not universal. HiVAM’s published driver workflow supports queued operations, while files still require a working upload connection. An action shown locally may not yet be saved on the server. Learn the queue states and conflict process in your deployed release before relying on it in the field. After reconnecting, verify source records and upload evidence. Do not repeatedly resubmit a collection or delivery because the first acknowledgement is delayed.

Your learning goals

What you’ll learn

  • Distinguish local queue from server confirmation.
  • Keep file uploads and supported actions separate.
  • Recover retries and conflicts without duplicate work.

Useful terms

Queued
Saved locally for a supported later synchronisation attempt.
Conflict
A mismatch requiring review because server state changed or an action cannot apply.

Step-by-step operating routine

  1. Prepare while connected

Open the assigned work and required available papers before leaving coverage. Confirm what remains accessible offline in the current release. Do not assume every document or feature is cached automatically.

    Record or confirm
    • Assigned job
    • Available documents
    • Supported offline actions
  2. Record supported facts carefully

Use only actions documented as offline-capable. Keep the correct job and quantities. Observe whether the action is queued, pending or confirmed; a local success indication is not necessarily server acceptance.

    Record or confirm
    • Action
    • Job reference
    • Quantity
    • Queue state
  3. Keep evidence ready for upload

Follow the supported capture process and protect the device. Files require a working upload connection; verify whether the current app retains a pending file or requires reattachment. Do not promise automatic offline file recovery.

    Record or confirm
    • Evidence location
    • Upload requirement
    • Pending state
  4. Reconnect and review replay

Allow supported queued actions to synchronise, then inspect results. Reopen the source record or ask dispatch to verify. A rejected action or conflict needs review, not blind repeated submission.

    Record or confirm
    • Replay result
    • Server reference
    • Conflict reason
    • Owner
  5. Complete uploads and reconciliation

Upload remaining evidence when connected and verify attachment to the correct job. Reconcile quantities and collection references. If a device is lost or local storage cleared, report potentially unsynchronised work promptly.

    Record or confirm
    • Upload result
    • Source record
    • Duplicate check
    • Unresolved work
Worked example

A queued delivery, an unuploaded file

A supported delivery update is queued during a coverage gap, but its proof file has not uploaded. On reconnection, the driver verifies the delivery action’s server result and then uploads the evidence through the supported process. Dispatch sees the actual document state; the job is not described as having approved POD merely because the local update existed.

  • Check queue and server states separately.
  • Verify the file upload.
  • Avoid duplicate collection submissions.

Exceptions and mistakes to avoid

  • Clearing browser or app storage can remove unsynchronised local work.
  • Shared devices and accounts can expose another person’s queued data.
  • Do not assume a retry succeeded until its result is confirmed.

Check your understanding

Try answering first, then open the explanation. Use the worksheet and source records to practise the task.

Can every file upload work offline?

No. Files require a working upload connection; confirm pending-file behaviour in the deployed app.

What proves a queued action completed?

A confirmed server result and the correct source record, not only a local queue message.
